The desert does not do moderation

Everyone warns you about desert heat. Nobody warns you that the same place will try to freeze you fourteen hours later. The high desert does not do moderation, which is honestly why I keep coming back to it.

I went out for two days between storms with a light pack and a heavy respect for water math. Nineteen miles round trip to a wash I like, the kind of place where the quiet has texture. No signal after the first ridge. I told two people my route and my walkout time, which is the entire solo safety speech condensed into one sentence, so consider yourself lectured.

DAY 1

The walking was easy and hot until four, then the light went long and gold and every rock turned into a photograph. I made camp early on purpose. Desert dusk is the show and I wanted a front row seat, dinner going in the steel pot while the sky did its thing. Chili mac, extra cheese, eaten straight from the pot, because dishes are a town concept.

The fire ban was lifted in the wash so I built a small one, more for company than heat. That is the most honest sentence in this entry.

THE NIGHT

The cold arrived around ten like someone flipped a switch. By two in the morning my thermometer read thirty four and the fire was coals. This was the night I had been waiting for, because I brought the three season bag specifically to find its floor. Verdict, comfortable at thirty four in a base layer. Actually asleep comfortable, not survival brochure comfortable.

I got up once because the stars would not let it go. No moon, no towns, the whole sky running its full routine. I sat on a rock in the bag like a caterpillar with opinions and used the lantern on its lowest setting to find my way back. Four desert trips now and it has never needed a recharge mid trip. I keep testing it because I do not quite believe it.

DAY 2

Desert dawn is a fast sunrise and a slow warmup. I let the sun reach the wash before breaking camp. Coffee first, opinions later. The walk out was nine miles of downhill thinking. I planned two new gear trials, talked myself out of buying a truck, and saw exactly one other human, a trail runner who nodded like we were coworkers.

What I relearned is that the desert audits everything. The ground is abrasive, the thermal swing is fifty degrees, and there is nowhere to hide a weak zipper. If a piece survives out here twice, it is probably shop material.
